Racoș Volcanic Geological Complex
A volcanic landscape unlike anything else in Transylvania - basalt columns, a lunar crater, and the Emerald Lake.
500 RON (~100 EUR) / person
Small-group day trip from Brașov. Maximum 4 guests. Hybrid vehicle.
About this tour
You will be collected from your hotel in Brașov and travel by eco-friendly hybrid vehicle northwest along the DN13 toward Sighișoara - through open agricultural countryside, past Saxon villages and fortified church spires, following the broad valley of the River Olt.
At Racoș, three distinct experiences unfold during an unhurried guided walk. You will stand at the rim of Romania's youngest volcano, its last eruption leaving behind a lunar landscape of red volcanic slag, pumice, basalt bombs, and dramatic color contrasts that have made this crater a sought-after location for film productions.
You will walk alongside the basalt columns - hexagonal, pentagonal, and polygonal formations up to 15 meters tall, created as lava cooled slowly over a million years ago and split into extraordinary geometric shapes.
The walk ends at the Emerald Lake: formed inside an old basalt quarry where excavations eventually struck a natural spring, this body of water glows deep turquoise and green, enclosed by sheer basalt walls in a silence that stops people mid-sentence.
Throughout the walk, your guide will weave together the geology, the human history of this majority-Hungarian village, the story of how the quarry became a protected nature reserve, and the remarkable birdlife of the surrounding area - one of Romania's most important sites for birds of prey, including globally endangered species.
Time and conditions permitting, a visit to the partially-restored Sukosd-Bethlen Castle in the village center adds a layer of 17th-century Transylvanian history to the day.
